Seasonal Habits for Healthy Skin

Posted by Jeriel & Bobbie on

As the seasons change, I take time to come into harmony with nature and with myself. Summer is a time of movement and energy, a space for play, reckless schedules, and spontaneity. Moving into fall, I lean into structure, and through that, I can be more intentional about connecting to the world around me and my community. As I begin this process of re-centering, I focus on reconnecting with my body and falling back into routines.

In the fall, life is expanding and contracting simultaneously and I feel these shifts deeply in my skin. I often adjust my skincare routine with the season to synchronize with nature and the changing weather.

As temperatures rise and drop and the air gets drier, we must take extra care of our skin to ensure it continues to retain its natural moisture levels. With the right products and a few simple practices, you can keep your skin feeling nourished all year round, no matter the climate. Here are a few tips to help you and your skin adapt to weather changes.

Switch it up

At the start of each new season, the first change in my skincare routine is always my facial cleanser. Over the summer, I’m constantly having to apply and reapply sunscreen, and I often find myself with sweat and sand all over my face. To keep my skin clean and less oily, I use our Sea Clay & Tea Tree Facial Cleanser. As Fall approaches, I switch to a gentler, more hydrating Rose Clay & Lavender Cleanser to get that extra bit of moisture and calmness I need.

Our Rose Clay & Lavender cleanser is a favorite of mine for a few reasons. The captivating color of deep blush is such a refreshing return to femininity. I'm reminded of my mother as I inhale the calming lavender scent and reflect on the beauty she has shared with me. While deeply nurturing and calming, this cleanser is packed with nutrients that maintain skin structure and integrity.

extra hydration

Another skincare step that I change is to start using our Neroli & Frankincense Mist twice in my daily routine.  I mist my skin before I apply moisturizer, and again afterwards. Balancing my pH is really important as the weather and life change while supporting my microbiome and ensuring my skin is hydrated.

Mix & Mask

As the months get cooler, I transition away from using our Sea Clay & Goats Milk Mask, which is great for oily summer skin, and I begin alternating between our Probiotic & Kelp Marine Mask and our Rose Clay & Goats Milk Mask that I mix with plain greek yogurt.  Maintaining skin hydration is critical for me in transitional months. I have always had acne-prone and reactive skin and have found that if I can keep my skin hydrated I can keep it much calmer.

Beauty for the Body

There are many other changes I try to make in the fall to support my body internally as well, I try to flood my system with nutrient-dense foods and take extra supplements. Here are a few other ideas to incorporate into your seasonal skincare routine:

lymph support

The kids are bringing home germs and our schedule is more rigid so I lose some time to rest and manual lymph support is critical in staying healthy.  During the fall, I start to incorporate dry brushing a few times a week to help support my lymph system.

Dry brushing is an Ayurvedic practice that has been around for centuries and is said to have many health benefits. It works by exfoliating the skin in a certain pattern with a brush that has natural fiber bristles. The thought is that the coarse bristles will help to remove dead skin and improve the skin's ability to rid the body of toxins through the pores. Dry brushing is believed to help the body detoxify by opening pores and stimulating sweating, which eases the flow of fluids and toxins throughout the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system helps to keep us healthy by fighting off infections, but when there is too much toxin or illness in the system, the lymph nodes may become blocked and swollen.

healthy gut

In the fall and winter our metabolism naturally slows down and adding a scoop of Sakara Metabolism Super Powder to my coffee helps keep me energized. With ingredients like Kelp Extract to support lipid metabolism, Gymnema Sylvestre to curb sugar cravings and maintain healthy blood sugar levels, L-Glutamine to protect your gut health, Horsetail extract to ease bloating and flush out excess liquids, and Black Pepper Piperine to stimulate digestion.

Glow from within

Supplements: I add a combination of rosehip and vitamin c to my supplements to support healthy skin structure, as well as oregano oil to help boost my immunity.

Revising your diet to include healthy fats and vitamins found in foods like avocados, nuts, and leafy greens can also provide vital nourishment for optimal skin health. Taking these preventative measures as the weather changes can make a big difference in your skin's well-being.

Don’t forget to up the hydration inside your body too - make sure to get your daily quota of fluids such as water or herbal teas to help nourish your skin from within.
